CHARGED Tunes: “Long Distance” Unspoken Love

It’s Monday, so let’s get you CHARGED this week with another classic Chinese melody. Janice Vidal (衛蘭), often simply known as Janice, is an HK pop, jazz, and R&B artist hailing from Hong Kong. As you might have guessed from her last name, Janice’s father is of Filipino decent, while her mother is of Chinese Korean decent. Many are familiar with her and her connection with famed singer Leon Lai (黎明), once part of the “Big 4″ Canto-Pop Four Heavenly Kings of the last decade. Janice is most famous for covering previously sung songs of Leon Lai’s, and because of that, gave her the road to fame. Interestingly, she’s admitted she’s not very fluent in Cantonese, relying on English romanization of lyrics while recording. But that hasn’t stopped her from re-singing some of these great classics of Leon’s. Check out both versions below!

Girls’ Generation Wants a World Tour

It has taken four years, three platinum records, and two Asia Tours for one group of nine angelic girls to accomplish what no other Korean pop singers have done. According to SM Entertainment, their management company, Girls’ Generation are the first Korean singers to make successive appearances on American talkshows. On January 31st, the girls performed the English version of their newest, ultra smexy single, “The Boys,” on CBS’s “The Late Show With David Letterman.” Next morning, the girls performed the song again on ABC’s “Live! With Kelly.” Both performances had huge support from their fans as fanchants could clearly be heard throughout their performances.

The news of their US national TV debut traveled far and wide as countless broadcasting stations around the world reported on their special American trip including Taiwan, Thailand, and Spain. This shows the girls’ influence have reached far beyond the borders of their native country of South Korea. The girls have come a long way since their debut in 2007 to get to this point in their career.

Other prestigious Korean performers including Wonder Girls, Rain, and label-mate BoA never made it this far before returning their focus on South Korea. Perhaps Girls’ Generation can prove to be an exception as they have shown in their native country they have talent beyond merely singing and dancing as a group. In South Korea, the girls have generated plenty of buzz through various activities from each of the members including performing in live musicals, acting on TV shows, and participating in countless variety shows. In an interview after the performances, the girls were asked about their next goal, to which the girls eagerly replied they want a world tour. Looking at their track record, the goal does not sound as farfetch as compared to their predecessors. Let’s hope their dream turns into reality.

While we await for their seemingly inevitable world tour, the girls have a pleasant surprise coming up for us English speaking fans. At the same interview after their appearances, the girls revealed they are preparing for an all-American album slated for release during the spring or summer of this year!

Bleach Manga Coming To An End

Tite Kubo’s highly successful Bleach is one of the most widely known manga and anime series to date. However, after 11 long years since it was first serialized, the popular series is entering it’s final story arc starting Monday the 6th of February.

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, Bleach follows the adventures of a young man named Ichigo Kurosaki, who obtains the power of a Soul Reaper (Shinigami) and is tasked with the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding souls to the afterlife.

The series’ end was announced in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on Monday. Kubo started drawing the manga in 2001 and has since gone on to sell more than 72 million copies in Japan and has become one of the most sold mangas in the United States. The anime adaption’s original run began in 2004 and was also received well with viewers. The series has also since gone on to spawn four anime movies.

It is indeed sad news that after 11 years this epic series is coming to an end. Growing up with Bleach, I for one will never forget the first time Ichigo used Bankai. As it takes its place in manga and anime history, fans all around the world will surely remember the series forever.

Hello Kitty x Evangelion Products Coming Soon!

If there’s one thing that Hello Kitty does best, it’s collaborations. In the past, we’ve seen them work together with the popular One Piece anime, as well as the successful video game franchise Street Fighter. Now, Sanrio’s most iconic kitty will be teaming up with Evangelion for the upcoming film, “Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Q“.

To be released in May, a variety of products ranging from stationary, clothing, and accessories will be unveiled by ten different companies. These products will feature Hello Kitty dressed up as “Ayanami Rei” and “Soryu Asuka Langley”, main characters from the original series.

Nothing has been revealed yet, so stay tuned!
