Normally it would be pretty unsettling if it felt like your furniture was embracing you – especially if it resembles a giant human doll. But that’s not the intent of the “Tranquility Chair” from Japan.
The chair is the product of Japanese company UniCare and is intended to “make you feel safe” according to a UniCare spokesperson. “It can be used by anyone but it is designed for older people”.
The hugging chair was inspired by the studies of Professor Hidetata Sasaki and was also designed to assist dementia patients or those who suffer from anxiety, fear or temper problems. All through the power of relaxation.
The spokesperson also explained that:
“They are comforting for people who live alone – they can talk to them and hug them. They also play old Japanese music, which is nostalgic for older people”.
One of these hugging chairs would set you back 46,000 yen ($419) at the International Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo.
So if you want a bit of extra company at home, this could be an interesting investment for you!
