Vancouver isn’t known for being the most fashionable place on the earth. However, when Vancouver Fashion Week rolls around, it can’t be denied that there is yet some style to appreciate around town. I attended VFW for the first time last week and was pleasantly surprised by the level of workmanship and talent evident in the collections I viewed. Foremost in my mind, surprisingly, was a Japanese menswear line by the formidable Shinya Yamaguchi. I loved the minimalist yet strikingly bold designs of his designs, which were surprisingly wearable. As well, his signature piece of an oversized, almost-cartoonish shoe has been readily embraced by male fashionistas and fashion authorities alike. After watching several other collections, Yamaguchi’s collection leaped off the stage in terms of clean-cut designs and monochromatic ensembles that were extremely appealing to both male and female viewers (although I did spy some male spectators sit up in their seats when his collection was being modeled).
Shinya Yamaguchi, who was born in Yokohama, Japan, graduated from the Tokyo Media Academy Artists, Stylists, and Designers Vocational School. The young designer managed to win three awards while at the school and was recognized by a local media company in 2009 for his innovative shoe designs. Since then, he has collaborated with RYNSHU at the Paris Men’s Collection in 2010 AW and 2011 SS; as well, a slew of Japanese celebrities and models have been known to wear his designs. Presently, his Tokyo street-style-oriented brand and company is known as “Long Tall Tokyo,” an apt name after one grasps the general style of his pieces and footwear.
While I only attended Vancouver Fashion Week for one day, I kept myself updated with the steady stream of social media covering the other collections throughout the week. In them, I was interested to see that one of the more high-profile male fashionistas had begun to wear Yamaguchi’s designs– more specifically, his shoes and accessories.
