You may not immediately recognize Fred Cheng’s name as a singer, but while he has been more visible in the past for his acting career, his career as a singer is about to blast off this summer. 30 year-old Fred Cheng 鄭俊弘 is a native Vancouverite who made his name as a supporting actor in Hong Kong following his performances in TVB dramas such as Love Bond (心花放) and Forensic Heroes (法證先鋒).

Why am I introducing him as a singer then? Long story short: Fred actually competed in 2001’s TVB International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship (the same competition where Anita Mui, Andy Hui, Eason Chan, Sammi Cheng, and a whole horde of other artists were “discovered”) and was signed to a music label subsequently. Unluckily, the company shut down its business and so Fred began his television actor career. After more than a decade focused on acting, last summer Fred finally had a chance to sing on a stage again. He participated in TVB’s first-ever The Voice of the Stars (星夢傳奇) and surprised everyone with his immense musical talent, oftentimes playing the guitar on stage too, and won with 68% of audience votes plus the “Professional Recommendation” award from the show’s judges. His first solo album under The Voice Entertainment Group (a TVB subsidiary) will be released this July.

Thankfully, we’ll be able to hear Fred’s voice even before the album is released! After Never Dance Alone, also known as M Club, wrapped up its run this week in Hong Kong, the next drama slotted is The Ultimate Addiction (點金勝手) which features Fred’s first solo opening theme song. Give it a listen – I like the intensity of the song and am looking forward to the drama. And don’t just keep your ears open, keep your eyes open too because it’ll also be the first time we’ll see another Vancouver native, Gloria Tang 鄧佩儀, acting in a TVB drama! Talk about #VancouverPride, eh?

As soon as the theme song video comes out, I’ll update the video above. Bear with his awkward head shot for now, sorry!
