After the resounding success of Donnie Yen’s role of the martial arts master, Ip Man, many other incarnations of the film have spawned. This includes the upcoming Ip Man: The Final Fight, which focuses on the title character’s elderly years leading up to his final moments (as the film’s title suggests).
Anthony Wong (The Untold Story) will be playing the film’s protagonist as the elder version of Ip Man, along with Anita Yuen (I Love Hong Kong)who will play his wife and Eric Tsang (Infernal Affairs) will be playing Ip Man’s friend-turned rival. In the director’s helm will be Herman Yau, who directed the first Ip Man spin-off Ip Man: The Legend is born.
The grandmaster’s students will be played by Jordan Chan, Gillian Chung, Timmy Hung and Luxia Jiang. Even Ip Chun, the actual son of Ip Man, will be making a special appearance in the film.
TwitchFilms explains the synopsis as:
In post-war Hong Kong, legendary Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man is reluctantly called into action once more, when what began as simple challenges from rival kung fu styles soon draws him into the dark and dangerous underworld of the Triads. Now, to defend life and honour, he has no choice but to fight one last time…
With Tony Leung Chiu-Wai’s The Grandmaster coming up and Donnie Yen returning in Ip Man 3, the Wing Chun master surely has his year cut out for him. Let’s hope the films do justice to the legend’s name!
The release date of Ip Man: The Final Fight is set in late March; check out the trailer above! It doesn’t seem to be short of any martial arts action! What do you think of this Ip Man incarnation?
