When KPOP fans gather together on Facebook, through forums, via casual conversations, this question is bound to come up: What is your favourite artist/band? As the discussion gets more heated, usually we end up talking about where they are from and which entertainment company they are associated with.

Let’s break down the groups by entertainment companies and talent agencies, South Korea’s BIG 3: S.M. Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment. They are Korea’s top 3 because they possess the largest market share and international domination and presence.

S.M. Entertainment

Dubbed as the big pop-idol ‘mainstream’ talent agency, its current roster of recording artists include top-notch popular girl and boy groups: Super Junior, SHINee, Girls’ Generation, TVXQ, BoA, TRAX etc. Founded by Lee Soo-Man himself, he has successfully marketed and dominated most of the KPOP fans around the world with their groups. I’m sure you’ve heard of the successful S.M. Town Live Concert world tour that held numerous concerts internationally; with previous locations such as New York, Tokyo Japan, and Taiwan. The up and coming new boy band, EXO has yet to debut but is causing a stir amongst many KPOP followers internationally from the numerous teasers released already.  They are also close to finishing their global auditioning!

YG Entertainment

Being the company that is known for their artists’ unique style and specialized hip hop/RnB music, Big Bang, 2NE1, SE7EN, Gummy, Tablo and others prove to be a group of solid, outstanding KPOP stars. YG’s concerts are always highly saught after because of their quality and mixture of songs and surprises it gives to the audience. Recently the YG family held a concert, enjoy this clip:

JYP Entertainment

JYP’s roster of idols stars certainly are not any weaker than the prior mentioned companies. 2PM, 2AM, Wonder Girls, Miss A are all talented, famous KPOP singers produced by none other than the founder himself Park Jin-Young. JYP entertainment has expanded to the Asian market with miss A’s debut, 2PM’s asia tours and also to the United States with their debut of Wonder Girls a couple years ago until now.

These three companies even collaborated together for a real variety show, “KPOP Star” to search the next best idol star through a series of auditioning, competition and battles with other contestants. There are also other notable companies too: DSP Ent. Core Contents and Starship etc. Here is a memorable cover from the show:
