There is no doubt the nine girls of the South Korean girl group, Girls’ Generation (SNSD), can bring the boys (and girls) out wherever they go. In the second of installment of their Asia Tour, Girls’ Generation performed in front of more than 14,000 people at the Hong Kong AsiaWorld Expo on January 15th. I finally had my chance at seeing them live since their debut back in 2007. Needless to say, it was worth the wait!
Over the span of 3 hours and 32 performances, the girls lit up the stage with their renowned catchy and upbeat songs such as “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)”, “Oh!”, and “Hoot”. Each accompanied by their equally addictive dance scores. The night also included a performance of their latest English single, “The Boys“. And to the girls’ amazement, the audience sang along to one of their most popular #1 single, “Gee.”
To return the favour to the group, die hard SONE fans prepared several special events of their own. During the performance of the song, “Complete,” the performance hall turned into a sea of signs saying “You + Me = Complete” signifying the girls and their fans complete each other. As well, at the end of the last song of the concert, the fans released their pink balloons to fill the hall with the girls’ trademark colour.
The girls were deeply touched by the grand gestures prepared by the audience as this was just their first time in HK. Some of the girls even shed tears of joy after witnessing the special events prepared for them. . The highlight of the end of the show was Jessica shouting, “I love dimsum!” Obviously she does.
Perhaps the Korean pop scene got lucky in having a fanbase in Hong Kong or maybe the Korean entertainment industry has formulated the makings of world renowned pop superstars. One thing is for certain, Hong Kong loves their Kpop.
Girls’ Generation were not the first korean performers within the last several months to perform infront of a sold out Hong Kong audience. Last August, eight of korea’s hottest acts performed at the same hall over the span of two nights at an event called “Kpop Girls in Love and Boys In Power.” In addition, C.N.Blue, arguably Hong Kong’s favorite Kpop boy band, held their “Blue Storm” Asia Tour just the week before, a few halls down in the same venue.
If you’re planning to double dip on some joyful Hong Kong shopping AND some explosive korean performances; plan a trip to Hong Kong, the odds are in your favour! But if you are dying to want more, catch them in Thailand on February 12th for the concert!
