After his recent announcement of his retirement from the basketball world, Yao Ming has been busy: going back to school for a university degree in business management, managing a Chinese basketball team as well as his charity commitments. The China’s sports hero is now setting up his own wine company, his reason being to satisfy a new growing thirst for the alcoholic drink in his home country.
Under the name “Yao Family Wines”, they will be selling vintage wines using grapes from six valleys in the Napa Valley region in California, which reflects his time playing in the NBA, stated by China Daily. According to a post on the Yao Family Wines website, the company already have their own winery.
The first bottle will be auctioned at a charity event organized by the Special Olympics (which Yao is the global ambassador for) this Sunday for an “extremely rare” magnum-size bottle starting at 60,000 yuan (more than 9000 US).
If Yao’s wine is as good as his basketball, Yao Family Wine’s may offer something new for any wine connoisseurs out there.
