August 27, 2011 Carolyn Shum Comments

Michael J. Fox Theatre was filled with claps and cheers last night on August 26th, to celebrate the Sunshine Nation champions: [1] Sam Ly (age 24) and [7] Fionn Wiens (age 17). Sunshine Nation 2011, co-organized by Canada’s Fairchild Radio (AM1470/FM 96.1) and Meteor Garden Production has succesfully showcased its finale concert yesterday night and it has garnered a lot of attention and more than 300 people were gathered in Michael J. Fox, Burnaby for this pageant / talent search for Asian teens.

After a series of performances and talent showcases, Sam and Fionn, the hot picks from the start of the event, snatched the Sunshine Boy and Girl 2011 titles. Other awards and winners include: “Best Talent Award” given to [3] Jeffrey Pai (age 17) and “Fido Pepper Wireless Like Me Award” was voted by the public to [8] Andrea Ng (age 17). Lastly, [2] Kevin Fan (age 22) earned the “Friendship Award”.

The organizer did something rather unique and special with their concert programmes as they distributed electronic picture frames instead of the traditional paper pamphlets to complement the “Social Media Connection” theme of this year’s Sunshine Nation.

After the talent performances from the Sunshine Nation 2011 Talent Show in Crystal Mall, the finale show highlighted 3 new components: Character impersonation competition, fashion catwalk show with Little Sunshine 2011 and question and answer section to test contestants IQ and intelligence. Each of the boyz and girlz not only showcased their charms and stage presence, they were very appreciative of the audience and especially friends and family who came to support them. The impersonation competition was most entertaining as the contestants each imitated people and characters like: Korean singer/actor Rain, Korean band Super Junior M, Obama, US. President, Canadian singer Justin Bieber, cartoon Dory from Nemo and Russell from Up movie.

Before the winners were announced, Yao Yao (郭書瑤), singer from Taiwan, was the guest performer and sang 4 lovely pieces for the audience and fans from Vancouver to enjoy. The special guest performer has earned the nickname as the “Goddess for stay-at-home boys” and her cute bubbly personality and sweet voice on stage, proved to be the highlight for many photographers on site to snatch a picture!

Awards and finalists were announced and Sunshine Nation 2011 came to an end with laughter and joy. Overall, the show was entertaining and filled with energy. Many fans and friends of the contestants cheered loudly for them and the show fully displayed a strong synergy amongst the productions crew, audience and contestents to make it a great successful show. All in all, if you were to ask me if I would go see Sunshine Nation 2012 next year, I would definitely go and support these young teenagers who participated to gain an awesome, once-in-a-life-time experience.
