Chinese Punch Americans on the Court, Fans Throw Water Bottles

August 22, 2011 Winnie LZ Comments

Apparently punching is not just for bar fights and Wii wrestling.

In an embarrassingly unfriendly game at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Arena last Thursday, Aug. 18, Chinese and American basketball players pummeled each other on the court.

Pandemonium soon ensued, with players throwing metal chairs at one another.

Referees whistled frantically to stop the chaos. As the violence finally abated and both teams were ushered off the court, the fans responded by throwing water bottles at the exiting players.

This incident happened at the same as US Vice-President Joe Biden’s visit to China.

A few days later, the Chinese basketball team went to the airport to send off their American competitors, offering souvenirs to make good for last week’s unhappy exchange.

In online discussions, many Chinese expressed disappointment and embarrassment at their home team’s behaviour.
