On May 28, 2011, people from all over gathered at BLVD22, Vancouver’s newest nightclub to see Toronto’s J.Reyez perform for the first time in the city. Hosted by Pandamonium Productions and BlackStar Entertainment, the event’s MC was famous YouTube celebrity Timothy De La Ghetto (Traphik). Starting off with a meet and greet session that involved other YouTube stars such as J.Reyez and rising Vancouver figure Chengman (aka Boss Nguyen), fans were ecstatic to meet their favourite celebrities.
Starting off the show was Vancouver rapper Scopez. Growing up as an anti-social outcast, Scopez spent a lot of his time in his studio to prove to the world that even the most introverted people can share their messages through the medium of music. He was later joined by R&B singer MSHAMBZ to end his performance, and they both did a great job of inspiring the crowd.
Next up was Vancouver duo The Gentleman’s Vibe. Performing hits from their newest mix-tape “Oh Snap we’re Back”, they were able to energize the crowd with their enthusiastic set. During the end, they serenaded a member of the audience with a cover of Drake’s “Fall for Your Type”.
After a quick performance by Raw Dance Crew from Toronto, J.Reyez finally hit the stage. Opening the set with his own original songs “Maybe One Day” and “Smile Through it All”, he eventually went on to do covers of chart-topping hits such as Wiz Khalifa’s “Black & Yellow” as well as Taeyang’s “Wedding Dress”. Partway through, the Korean-Canadian hip-hop artist paid tribute to the Vancouver Canucks by putting on a Canucks hat. He then invited the crowd closer to the stage, and Traphik joined him to end a very successful show.
