On May 6th, Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver was packed for Inspire 2011. Featuring the famous hip-hop artist MC Jin as the headline, the event showcased some of Vancouver’s premier local talent. With people coming from all over the city to enjoy the show, the AX3 team also took part in a night meant to inspire and motivate the public.
Kicking off the concert was a beautiful performance by Ezra Kwizera. Growing up as a Rwandan refugee, Ezra has been through tough times. Via a mixture of various genres such as reggae and soca, Ezra’s music fittingly talks about war, hardships, and poverty. Through his rap and songs, the audience was really able to connect and understand the difficulties that underlie all of Ezra’s music.
The MC of the event, Sol Guy, would eventually make his way on stage. Known for his work in the music industry, and as the host of 4REAL on MTV Canada, Sol definitely knew how to work a mic. Drawing wandering eyes, there was never a dull moment with him on stage. Between sets and introductions, the Vancouver-based social entrepreneur also talked about his experiences in terms of social activism. Using comparisons and real life examples, Sol definitely did his part to inspire the crowd.
Another social activist by the name of Sammie Jo also spoke during the event. Like Sol, Sammie is also a local Vancouverite that gives back to the community. But one thing that really sets her apart is her dedication to helping her home country. Being from the Philippines, she often organizes groups to help build schools back home. Her speech was short, but arguably had the most profound influence all night. After all, “We got to give to live”.
Some of Vancouver’s local talent then came out to shine. In order of appearance: the Boombox Saints, Artistic Space Studios, Core Revolution, and Jay Kin. The hip-hop break-dancing dance solo by Teddy Kim of Artistic Space Studios was definitely one of the highlights of the night. Ian “Creative” Nsenga also had a set where he performed his catchy single, “Creative”.
Afterwards, MC Jin, the main event that everyone was waiting for appeared on stage. Being the first time Jin had appeared in Vancouver in almost five years, you could only imagine how wild his fans were. With the charismatic artist telling everyone to come closer, people quickly left their seats to crowd around the front stage. According to his own words, that’s how he connects closer with his fans and supporters.
First performing the song “Angels”, Jin shook the house. The Hong Kong based artist possessed amazing stage presence, and is something that can likely be attributed to his countless past performances. Afterwards, Jin rapped songs such as “Changed Man” and “Whatever it Takes” off his latest mixtape, Sincerely Yours. The mixtape according to Jin, was created specifically for Inspire 2011, and that night was the first time he performed it.
Jin did a great job of interacting with the audience all night. By drawing them to the stage, he was able to shake hands and maintain better levels of eye contact. During various parts of his set, he also asked the audience questions. One of those questions resulted in Jin performing his signature track “ABC” in Cantonese.
Before ending his set, Jin once again treated all his Vancouver fans by playing an unreleased song, “Shoot for the Moon”. To be released on his upcoming birthday, June 4th, the lyrics conformed well with the whole premise of Inspire 2011. Jin then jumped into the crowd of screaming fans.
Overall, the event was a great success. While the biggest emphasis seemed to be on Jin’s set, let’s not forget the other performers. Each guest brought something unique to the table, and in one way or another was able to influence and inspire the audience.

Managing Editor for AX3. I have a passion for cheesy romantic comedies and tear-inducing melodramas. I also enjoy long walks on the beach. Too cliché?
